Most people put off visiting a flooring store for the same reason they put off car shopping: they picture a salesperson following them around, asking about their budget before they’ve even had a chance to look at anything.
We hear it all the time. So let’s take the mystery out of it — here’s exactly what happens when you walk into a flooring showroom, what to bring with you, and what to ask before you commit to anything.
First: you don’t need an appointment
You can walk in, look around, touch everything, and leave without giving anyone your phone number. That’s a completely normal visit and it happens every day.
If you’d rather have someone walk you through it, just say so when you come in. And if you’d rather browse quietly for twenty minutes first, that’s fine too. Flooring is a decision most people make once every ten or fifteen years — there’s no reason to rush it.
What to bring (this is the part that saves you a second trip)
Your showroom visit checklist
1. Photos of the room — taken in daylight. Not at night with the lamps on. Natural light is what you’ll actually live with, and it changes how a floor reads more than anything else.
2. Rough measurements. Length times width of each room is plenty. Don’t have them? Not a problem — a free in-home estimate solves that, and we measure properly anyway before anything gets ordered.
3. Something from the room. A throw pillow, a cabinet door photo, a piece of your baseboard. Undertones are the thing people get wrong most often — a floor that looks warm and inviting on its own can clash badly with cool grey cabinets.
4. A ballpark budget. Nobody’s judging, and it isn’t a negotiation tactic. It’s the fastest way to skip the floors that aren’t realistic and spend your time on the ones that are.
5. Your questions. Write them down. Everyone forgets at least one, and there’s a list further down you can steal.
What actually happens once you’re inside
A typical first visit runs twenty to forty minutes. Here’s the shape of it:
You look. Racks of full-size planks and carpet samples, grouped by type — hardwood, luxury vinyl, laminate, carpet, tile. You’ll get a feel for what you’re drawn to within a few minutes, and it’s often not what you expected walking in.
You get asked a few questions. Which rooms? Any pets? Kids? Does the space get wet — a bathroom, a laundry room, a door that opens onto the pool deck? Is anyone in the house hard on floors? These aren’t sales questions. They’re the difference between a floor that lasts fifteen years and one that looks tired in three.
You narrow it down. From dozens of options to three or four that genuinely fit how you live.
You take samples home. Free, no deposit, no commitment.
Why the take-home samples matter more than anything else
This is the single most useful thing you’ll do, and it costs nothing.
Showroom lighting is bright, even, and overhead. Your living room at 4pm on a cloudy Tuesday is none of those things. A plank that looked warm and golden under store lights can read grey and flat once it’s on your floor next to your sofa.
So take the samples home. Lay them down where they’ll actually go. Look at them in the morning, in the afternoon, and with the lamps on at night. Put them beside your furniture and your walls. Live with them for a few days.
Most people change their mind at least once during this step — and every single one of them is glad they did it before installation instead of after.
Questions worth asking before you commit
▸ Is installation included in this price, or quoted separately?
▸ What about subfloor prep, baseboards, and hauling away the old flooring? These are the line items that surprise people later.
▸ Is this floor genuinely waterproof, or water-resistant? In Florida, that distinction matters more than almost anywhere else.
▸ How long from order to installation?
▸ Who actually does the install — your own crew or a subcontractor?
▸ What’s the warranty, and what would void it?
▸ What happens if I don’t love it once it’s in?
That last one is the question almost nobody asks out loud — and it’s the fairest question there is. On qualifying Shaw products, the Love It or Replace It Guarantee means your flooring may be replaced within 99 days if you’re not completely satisfied.* Ninety-nine days of actually living on it, not ninety-nine seconds of deciding under store lights.
